Everything you need to know about restorative dentistry

The dentist is often associated with hesitancy, confusion, and negative experiences. At dntl bar, we want our patients to feel the opposite. We strive for transparency, clear pricing, and clear communication within all of our practices. The transparency between patient and dentist is extremely important when finding a dentist that you can trust. We know that your trip to the dentist can become very overwhelming when you are told you need certain procedures and treatment that you are not too familiar with. Today, we will be talking about restorative dental work and what that means exactly so you can be ready for your next dental appointment!

What is restorative work?

“Restorative dentistry” is the term dental professionals use to explain how they replace missing or damaged teeth. Fillings, crowns (also known as “caps”), bridges and implants are common restorative treatments for missing or damaged teeth. The primary goal of restorative dentistry procedures is to bring back your natural smile and prevent further oral health issues in the future.

It is important to perform restorative dentistry within a timely manner. If a missing or damaged tooth goes untreated it can result in infection or a bigger health concern down the line.

If you think you have a damaged tooth, discuss your options with your dental professional.

Why are restorative dentistry procedures important?

Restorative dentistry procedures are important to treat for several reasons. Some being the following:

  • Restoring damaged or missing teeth in the mouth can help keep teeth properly aligned
  • It can make it easier to maintain good oral care habits to help prevent plaque build-up and the complications plaque build-up can lead to
  • Lastly, missing or damaged teeth can affect your health, appearance, and overall self-esteem

Restorative vs Cosmetic?

Cosmetic dentistry and restorative dentistry are similar in that they use some of the same materials. However, if treatment is needed because of a disease, it is considered restorative. Although some restorative procedures do result in an aesthetically pleasing smile, cosmetic dentistry is elective and not medically necessary.

Some examples of cosmetic dentistry are veneers and teeth whitening.

Tips for taking care of your restorative work

  • Brush your teeth twice daily
  • Make sure to floss around your teeth, dental implants, crowns and bridges every day to avoid plaque build-up
  • Try not to eat hard or sticky foods that can damage your implant, bridge, or crown
  • Use a good mouthwash to prevent cavities and plaque build-up
